Listings for Ovarian Cancer Charity
When we heard about Cassie, we were moved to help her out. This is her story:
"The 30th August 2012 will be a day I never forget - this was the day I ultimately learned that I had ovarian cancer. We had surgery that day to remove the tumour, which involved having a full hysterectomy. This was followed up with 18 weeks of chemotherapy, and a second surgery in April 2013 removed a suspect nodule that was still floating around. In May 2013 I was given the all clear.
Then July 2013 happened. Some symptoms that I was now familiar with began to present themselves - needing to go to the bathroom more urgently, feeling full quickly after eating, bloating....the only thing I didn't have this time around was the agonisingly painful lower abdominal pain. But I was uncomfortable. So back to the doctors I went, who admitted me to hospital for further tests. The CT scan revealed that the cancer has reoccurred.......
So we have started chemotherapy again, and the doctors are using this in conjunction with a new drug called Avastin - it's doing amazing things for bowel cancer sufferers, however there are no real runs on the board for ovarian cancer. Therefore it's not on the PBS (yet), which means it's expensive. How expensive? $3,870 a treatment, and treatment is every fortnight - EEEEK! The drug company paid for the first two sessions, and they are helping out with one session for every two that we self-fund. Regular scans and tests will monitor the effectiveness of Avastin, but the doctors have indicated that they would like us to continue with Avastin indefinitely. The drug company has indicated that once we have self-funded approximately $50,000 worth, they will pay for the rest.
So my wonderful friends started fundraising for us. So far we have had a quiz night, a dance night, and a live music event. A call out was done for clothes/jewellery/handbags for a "garage sale" type of event - when a wedding dress was donated, we put up a thank you on the facebook page (2gather2getherforcassie), and more rolled in. We got some national exposure with a newspaper article that started off in the local paper (I have attached this for you) and it snowballed from there, before we knew it we had soooo many dresses donated. I was completely overwhelmed with the huge level of support we received. We held a bridal sale, and although it was well attended, we didn't sell all the dresses, so this is why we have come to you. There are some stunning dresses left!
Our ultimate fundraising goal is $50,000 (so far we are at about $14,000), but every little bit will help. We hope that these beautiful dresses find a wonderful new home, and the gorgeous brides get themselves a fabulous bargain along the way!" - Cassie Persztik
